Abstract
Research summary (not the publisher abstract):
Purpose: Determine whether an anterior superior iliac spine osteotomy improves visualization through the lateral window of the ilioinguinal approach.
Methods: Investigators examined eight sacroiliac joints in four fresh-frozen cadavers. They measured visible bone surface in calibrated images before and after a digastric osteotomy and medial reflection, then compared paired measurements.
Results: Mean visible area increased from 53.4 to 88.0 cm² (P=0.04). The mean relative increase was 70%.
Interpretation: This cadaveric experiment supports greater surgical exposure with the added osteotomy. Potential advantages for reduction and instrumentation require clinical testing; the study does not demonstrate improved patient outcomes or quantify operative safety.
